It’s finally summer break and that means it is time for road trips and vacation plans! If your pet will be joining you on your vacation, there are some helpful tips for making it a stress free and enjoyable experience. Traveling with your pet by car is a lot more than just loading them up and driving off, planning is required to ensure your pet is safe and comfortable.
If your pet isn’t accustomed to riding around in the car for longer periods of time, start small by taking your pet on short drives. A pet should be comfortable and safe in a well-ventilated crate or carrier that is secured safely in the backseat or cargo area of the vehicle. If you are not bringing a crate or a carrier, use a pet safety harness so it is safely secure and do not allow your pet to stick their head out the window. While traveling, you should make sure that you have proof of the vaccinations your pet has had just in case there is a problem. This can be especially important if you are traveling to another state.
You should prepare a pet-friendly travel kit that holds all the necessities your pet will need! This kit should include food and water bowls, your pet’s food, bottles of water, a leash, waste bags or scoop, grooming supplies, medication if needed, and a first aid kit for your pet’s needs. You can also pack your pet’s favorite toy or pillow to help make the trip easier! While it is important to allow your pet easily accessible water during your journey, wait to feed them during a break from the vehicle to prevent choking.
Remember, it is extremely important to never leave your pet alone in the vehicle. Even with your vehicle windows vented, the interior of the vehicle can become way too warm for your pet in a short period of time. Be sure to schedule your travel plans to have stops that accommodate your furry family member too!
