Winter vehicle breakdown

Winter driving is unpredictable, thanks to the challenges of quickly changing weather and easily deteriorating road conditions.  Drivers should be prepared for the possibility of a roadside emergency which requires advance planning.  One item that is important to have in your car, truck, or SUV is a well-equipped roadside emergency kit.  The helpful Parts Department at Thelen Honda in Bay City, Michigan would be happy to help you with putting together a roadside emergency kit from our extensive parts selection.  Or, put together a kit from items you already have or can easily acquire.  The kit should be personalized to your own specific needs but should include several standard items.

The basic roadside emergency kit should include tow ropes, jumper cables, and an orange safety triangle or similar roadside marker such as road flares.  Make sure you have a spare tire, tire changing tools, and a jack should you need a tire change roadside.  Other helpful items include an ice scraper, small snow shove, flashlight, and vehicle fire extinguisher.

Besides safety and vehicle repair tools, a well-equipped safety kit will include comfort items for the driver and passengers.  During cold weather, a heavy blanket, gloves, and warm hat will be very welcome.  Shelf stable snacks and bottled water are important should you become stranded roadside for an extended time.  In addition, a first aid kit is an important part of any roadside kit.  From time-to-time refresh the snacks, water, and first aid kit items to make sure they are in usable condition when needed.

Storing your roadside emergency kit won’t be a problem thanks to the ample cargo space in our Honda lineup of vehicles.  Easily stow these essentials in a small plastic container or duffel bag in a place that is out of the way but easily accessible.  When an item is used from the kit, be sure to replace it quickly so you are prepared should you need that item again in the future.

Reaching your destination safely during harsh winter driving conditions requires some extra care and planning.  Hopefully, you will never need your kit, but if you do….you will be glad to have it!
